re: BUT
its not just the experimental nature, its the completely self-absorbed nature of each. both bands are/were excessively self-indulgent
re: BUT
music by its very nature is pretty self-indulgent. all musicians either want to show that they are smarter than everyone else (which sometimes morphs into more fucked up than everyone else) or that they are better looking than everyone else.
re: there are a lot of people in hell
i disagree. lots of music is self-indulgent
BUT
not all, like ... you know, lots of it is universal and so other people can empathize with the music. or at least, it has that effect. nin / pink floyd did not have any interest in fans, they just wanted to express their own personal shit ... similar to APC i'd say... just something that i thought of... i still don't think all music is self-indulgent.
re: ok so i went a little overboard
i think theres a difference in not having an interest in their fans and not having an interest in being famous. trent reznor wouldnt make crazy ass music videos and pink floyd wouldnt make silly movies if they were doing it just for themselves. for that matter, roger waters and the rest of pink floyd wouldnt have this huge conflict over what pink floyd actually is if they didnt care somewhat about their own image. theyre in the music business, and i dont mean that theyre sell-outs or anything, but if you can use your talents to put a little extra food on the table, you do it.
re: BUT
no wait, i don't have a BUT
i hope you run out of stupid names that aren't geoff to use
re: BUT
ive got a whole book of names right here. so i can go for a long time.
re: ok then
anyways, i wasn't claiming nin/pinkfloyd had no interest in their fans, just that they were more self-indulgent than most. actually, maybe i did claim that, but regardless. nin is reminiscent of pink floyd in that they are
1) both experimental
2) both driven by one primary person
3) both more self-indulgent than the average rock band
throw radiohead in the mix too, if you want.
re: ok then!
well i still think that the pink floyd-radiohead comparison has more merit than the pf-nin one. mostly because i dont like pink floyd or radiohead. because both of them want to be too smart for me. or maybe because they are too smart for me. and i like nin. because i can at least understand lines like "shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot/i'm gonna come all over you."

re: BUT
pink floyd is the most overrated band of the 70s. this comparison is too simple, just based on the rather experimental nature of each band and not their signifigance to the world of music in general.
instead, i propose that nine inch nails is our generations version of david bowie (at least pre-1977 bowie). because bowie is good. and so is nin. and both are very visual. and both and both are more into shocking people than just plain old psychedelia. and in the end, both care more about selling records than they are willing to admit.
