tourney!!

0843-march18-2004
didn't get much sleep last night

didn't have the best night last night in general

but

it's fucking tourney time.

a few ground rules -
1A) this is not the start of march madness. march madness started a week and a half ago. this is just the second act of the two parter.

2B) i think people need to stop making fun of the "i liked the mascot more" picking strategy. i mean, it only sets you up for bad things if you lose to someone who follows this strategy. and if you beat them? well congratufuckinlations.

3C) i like uconn and kentucky to win, but i'm gonna root for texas all the way through. so basically to the 2nd round when they underachieve their season away, like they do in every sport. fuckers.

with that out of the way, i just did a quick count, and i am pretty sure i've watched 46 of the 64 teams this season. granted, a lot of the smaller schools were watched in the last week, but yeah. 46/64, not the best.. i should recount.

anyways, the next two days are probably my favorite two days of the year sports-wise, other than the nfl draft and mlb opening day. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do!

Niv, you can make lists that are 1,2,3, etc or A,B,C, etc but there is NO NEED for 1A,2B,3C, etc. It's just stupid. stop it.

also, has there ever been a less exciting upset than the manhattan over florida upset that literally everyone i know predicted as soon as the brackets were announced?

1a) chad you're a fucking fascist. it's stupid cuz you don't like it? please, stop arguing semantics just cuz you like the sound of your writing voice. or something.

2b) i think everyone in the world picked manhattan. i wonder if florida was even the favorite. can someone get back to me on this?

3c) god i've been at work way too long today.

i like the sound of my writing voice? how many websites do i have where i write random shit that happened to me? thats what i thought...

it seems that in most tourneys, any team that is a "lock" to pull an upset loses, and the favorite comes out saying, "everyone said we didn't deserve the seed we got, but we proved blah blah blah..." And when a team does pull the upset, its usually out of nowhere, and the team comes out saying, "no one gave us a shot, but look blah blah blah." what does manhattan say now? "everyone thought we could pull the upset...and we did...thats about it...we sure showed them...how right they were..."

and you know you work with way too many women when...1) the radio is on...and we are listening to music, 2) UTEP-Maryland is coming down to the wire, there are like 12 seconds left, you are intently watching espn.com waiting for the next update...and your phone rings and your boss needs to talk to you immediately...about something that doesn't need to be done until tomorrow, 3) no one has left work early, and no one has said to me, "i thought utep was gonna pull that off" or "you think syracuse is gonna pull through this one?"

i can't wait until i get to leave in a half hour and can return to the real, tourney obsessed world

re: also...

from: chad (2004-03-18 17:27:41)

granted, i havent seen any of the games yet, but this has to be one of the all-time great first days...so far the only games not within three are the expect 1 over 16 blowouts and the manhattan upset. everything else has come down to the wire...which reminds me...back to the update of syracuse-byu

re: the difference...

from: niv (2004-03-18 22:02:47)

the difference between me and you, chad, is that while i write a lot because i like to, i don't yell at people over semantics, like "don't use that font, it sucks". instead, i yell at people for ideas, like "god chad, your arguments are weak under the guise of strong due to how arrogantly you write, and whenever you talk about politics you seem wishy-washy and arrogant AT THE SAME TIME". something like that. hehe

The best 10 bucks I ever spent...no no no, not the 10 on Chads mom...but on NCAAsports.com. Thats right, for 10 bucks you get an internet broadcast of all games. Delayed by one minute, but it allowed me to watch three games at one time, including the one on my TV.

I did have Manhattan picked too, and I had BYU (to the third round). And although I have on my bracket a Duke/UNC regional final (I think my head would explode), I was pulling for the Air Force upset.

Reasons why the A10 sucks and shouldn't be in the dance:
1A) Dayton...if anyone watched that game, they would know how ugly it was
2B) Xavier...athletic, but not fun to watch. I don't understand why Sato is good at the game.
3C) St. Joes...undefeated b/c they played in the A10. I'll give them credit for their two big wins (gonzaga and I forget the other team), but the A10 is terrible. I can't wait till the match up against a team with solid guards and good big men. They will get tooled on. My guess is Wake over them.

Sorry for the rant. I don't think I have ever watched so much basketball in one day. And to think, I get to do it again tomorrow.

re: dayton-depaul

from: chad (2004-03-19 10:21:51)

geoff and i watched the dayton-depaul, and while dayton made quite a case for keeping the A10 out of the tourney, depaul made just as good a case against C-USA. How do you keep a guy on the floor down the stretch who is 0-10 on the game from the line? and how do you go 0-10 from the line?

re: mid-majors

from: niv (2004-03-19 12:50:48)

yeah the mid-majors aren't doing much to endear me to them. then again, neither did the SEC (florida sucks so bad, and alabama shoulda lost, dammit) and the big ten (incredible suckage down the stretch by michigan state)

i guess i'll hold off on the big ten until we see how wisconsin and illinois do (God i'd feel dumb if they already played, hehe), but at least one conference was good - the acc. any surprise? no
