i promised, at some point, a tribute post to asian jon. now seems to be the time i can write that. however, what is there to say?
people always said jon was boring. and by people, i mean nick. nick called jon boring, a lot. and everyone else sorta ran with it, because let's face it, jon went out less than any of us. that's including me, and even ryan! so yeah, jon was boring in that sense. he did lots of work. he did fun things, but mostly on his own, which was frustrating, because everyone always had fun with asian. everyone.
and that's the key!
asian was either a con artist, or the most fun person to hang out with ever. here's what i'm saying. how many times did anyone ever get annoyed with him? VERY rarely for the guys, for sure, and most of it involved him not hanging out enough.
so i'm thinking either he knew exactly how much of him we could handle and rationed his public appearances accordingly, or (more likely) he was just really, really fun and he should be punched in the face more for working his way through college instead of living his way through college. though i guess now he's not regretting it, since he's going to be like #1 in his law school class or something (i have no proof of this.)
asian... if he was awake (BIG if), you could always go in and bounce stuff off of him. he played video games. he was incredibly good at (and willing to play and willing to teach) poker.
honestly, i think as a person he might be one of the best people i know. never arrogant but sometimes cocky, always had a balanced view on things that required a balanced view, always had a strong view when he knew the issue required a strong view, always backed his friends, incredibly loyal, but also incredibly good at telling you when you fucked up (believe me, i got that speech a few times)... yeah, if there's one person you should aspire to be, just based on character (the buzzword of this political season, as opposed to work-ethic or other things like that), i'd say asian jon.
i mean, the man reclaimed the word 'nip'.
yeah, it was rambling. but i miss the kid, and it all flooded back at once.
just so no one feels slighted, parker, phil, thad, nick, ken, ryan- i like you guys a lot too. i'm just real, real glad i lived next door to asian jon for a year.
asian!

re: i miss asian jon too
i met asian early in my sophomore year and was really amazed at both how nice this kid was and how damn fast he can write a football article. he was a natural. i also like how red he would turn when he'd drink vodka. however, i don't think that we ever had the time to really hang out because we were both study nerds. i would like to think that i'd like to read his thesis about Ajax, but i'm too lazy for that. rather, i just appreciate it's complexity and his complexity in general. i have a good memory of having sushi with him in chinatown which was sweet. he's one of those guys who you were always friends with, even before you met him. and even if you don't get to know him that well, you at least know that you're friends. and sometimes that is more than enough. asian, if you ever read this, i emailed you a couple days ago about your life. you should respond.
