for someone who doesn't like movies in general, i've seen a slew of them recently. take this last weekend, the weekend of the oscars where pretty much every channel brings out their big (movie) guns. that's a metaphor.
good:
'shakespeare in love'
'heat'
'apocalypse now'
'12 angry men'
the very end of 'patton'
average:
'lotr: two towers'
awful:
'matrix: reloaded'
'matrix: revolutions'
'apocalypse now' is really disturbing. that and full metal jacket... those movies messed me up. '12 angry men' was thoroughly enjoyable. you know my thoughts on 'shakespeare in love'. and 'heat' has got to be one of my top 5 movies ever. it's just friggin great.
'the matrix' was a shitty trilogy that hopefully is never resurrected. the first one was neat because it seemed like a very short jump from our world. the next two really lost that feel.
'two towers' = by far the worst lotr movie. just felt rushed. c'mon!
i have a couple of albums i wanna talk about too. first off, the arcade fire - funeral. i've skirted around it a few times, but this album just totally took a hold of me last week. the melodies are hypnotic, the songs are emo but not whiny, and it somehow sounds pretty original. color me impressed - it took me a while, because i am skeptical of the 'hip' bands... but in this case, they are hip for a reason. check them out.
the other album i very briefly visited was yo la tengo's seminal work, 'i can hear the heart beating as one'. very briefly. but i think i'm going to like this album. the problem is that the copy i have sounds like a friggin tape. of course, i'm taking the necessary steps to remedy this, but i'm holding off on fully emersing myself. this is what i got so far though - kind of a tortoise meets hum kinda thing going on, and since i like those two bands, i think i'm going to a good place. i'll talk about it more when i, you know, emerse myself. but i'm intrigued, and you should be too, because critics _loved_ this album.
for what its worth.
