i hate the rmv
let me tell you a tale. its a tale of me getting pissed off at this stupid state. i went to the rmv a few weeks ago, on my last friday off, and tried to get my ohio driver's license converted over to a mass license. a number of reasons that this had to be done -
1a) i had my registration/title converted to mass (and got mass plates in the process) and its not good to have my registration saying i live here and my license saying i live in ohio
2b) my title/registration was fucked up by the idiot who converted them, with my name coming out as 'nirah'. i need a mass license to get this remedied, for some stupid reason. i can't explain it.
3c) i live here, right? i should have a mass license.
anyways, went down there with my drivers license, social security card, and the only electric bill i have had mailed to me. this bill was from september, as all my bills since then have been paid online. i wait in line for a bit, then my number is called. i give the documents, fill out forms, get my picture taken, and the lady goes "wait, your documents are not all here". now, i have my old license with my picture, signature, ss#, and date of birth on it. i have my SS card. i have an electric bill with my current address on it. SOMEHOW this is not enough to prove i am who i say i am and i live where i say i do. she tells me that the license can count for the signature OR the date of birth but not both. do i have my birth certificate? uh, no. what about something else to validate a signature, like a cancelled check? yes, i can get one of those. ok, come back later. thanks assholes.
go back and read all the stuff i had on me. that really should be enough to show i am who i am. especially considering given my SS# they should be able to look me up in crazy databases and know everything about me ever.
as i was leaving, she also mentioned that my bill was out of date and i needed a new one. great.
anyways, i went back today. brought my drivers license, ss card, a cancelled rent check printed out straight from bank of america online, and my latest nstar bill, printed out on my computer. i thought i was all set. i go in, get a number, and just ask to the greeter how much it costs to convert an out of state license.
"$90"
what the fuck?
i decide to go through with it anyways. i go upstairs and my number is just being called out, so i give the lady my old application form, my "why was this person rejected form", and all my documents. she goes through them, gets to my nstar bill and says
"we cannot take online documents"
i ask her if she understands what the hell she is saying a few times. she asks me if i get any bills in the mail. i don't. she asks me if i have a check or something. my checks have my old address (25 warner), since i haven't had to order new checks since i moved. she asks me if i have a lease or something.
i have a lease somewhere.
she asks me to come back later.
i think i might just move the fuck out of massachusetts. seems a lot easier than trying to do all the things they would like you to do to live here, such as convert my plates and my license and registration and everything.

re: The RMV sucks
After having a hellish experience at the RMV, I googled "i hate the rmv" and found this post. I went through something similar today...I went last week, and they didn't approve of any of my documents to prove residency. So, I got a bank statement, and I went today and they rejected me AGAIN because my bank statement "didn't look official". Jackasses.
The worst part is that the RMVs I've been to here in Mass. are significantly better than the DMVs I used to go to when I lived in California. Those were the absolute worst, and they made out of state people take the test when transfering a license.
re: the rmv?
hi krissy, wow niv that google search thingy must be going crazy hah..
anyway, to share my experience about moving into mass as of 6 days ago.
I call up geico, to get insurance due to me getting a car. Geico informs me "We sell insurance in every state. Except Massachusetts. You'll find out why."
Well that's interesting. So i ended up getting insurance through a local dealer the first town over the border, after driving two hours to get up there. Then i register & get plates for my car from the RMV, but that was actually a painless procedure. kudos to me for checking the RMV website and finding the nearest full service RMV in mass, THEN calling an insurance company in that town to buy insurance. An hour back on my way home, I get a call on my cell from the insurance company saleswoman.
"I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you that you need to get your car inspected within 7 days of registering it or else you won't be covered by your comprehensive and crash insurance. I can fax you a list of places to get that done if you want."
oh, ok. Well yeah I wasn't about to turn around and head back up for an inspection. So I took care of that a few days later but the whole process seemed to be more than it needed to be. I've yet to try and change my license, I'll probably wait on that as long as I can.

re: ohio bmv
Just be glad they don't make you retake the test like stupid Ohio. Although they seem to have less red tape.
