weezer's newest album, make believe is set to come out on may 10th, 2005, just 3 short days before i turn 24.

1a) i should stop listening to weezer because i'm not 17 anymore
2b) weezer really needs to stop making music

i do not think 1a is going to happen, because the first two weezer albums have incredible staying power to me, and the third one isn't completely godawful so i'll throw it in from time to time. but that's pretty much where 2b comes in. weezer started getting soft with the green album, and make believe is the latest down that slippery slope from edgy emo garage rock to abysmal ballady punk-pop. none of the songs are memorable at all, except track one, of course, the repetitive "beverly hills". used to be, weezer did not have to repeat the same damn two words or the same stupid chorus over and over again to make a song memorable or interesting. however, the guitar is wholly uninteresting, and the lyrics are boring and simplistic. there is no clever word play as is found on pinkerton and none of the incredibly fun guitar that made the blue album such an instant classic.

the bottom line is this- weezer has softened up, either due to age or due to a need to make more 'acceptable' music - from what i know about the post-pinkerton rivers cuomo, it's hard to tell which it is. either way, its a failed attempt, and while i'll always hold a soft spot for weezer in my heart and will always give a future weezer album a chance, make believe is really not good at all.

your statement "used to be, weezer did not have to repeat the same damn two words or the same stupid chorus over and over again to make a song memorable or interesting." seems a little oversimplified. and it makes you sound more like a jilted lover than a critical listener.

the blue album is really, really straight ahead and formulaic when it comes to song form. it is RIFE with repetetive choruses.

now, they are awesome choruses, not stupid, so i guess i can see the point you are trying to make here, but the implication that the blue album isn't repetetive is just silly.

and i think the moniker of "stupid" is much, much too relative. if you mean simple, lyrically and musically, i agree. beverly hills is incredibly simple. BUT, when you were 13, why did you like the blue album? because it was interesting, or because it rocked?

my point being beverly hills rocks, even if it is simple.

clearly the entire point of your post was to express your dissapointment...which you did a very good job of. but to mask it in the guise of a pseudo-review seems a little disingenuous....

i'm just sayin.

listen to 'beverly hills', easily the most rocking song on the new weezer cd

then listen to 'my name is jonas'

and then eat my ass. i'm a jilted lover, yes, but i'm also right on this one

i can't believe you said beverly hills rocks

thats weak

i guess you confused 'the song buddy holly' and 'the entire blue album' or somethingthis was spread over two emails, not just one.

buddy holly, sweater song, say it ain't so, going surfing, in the garage.....

all awesome, awesome songs....but incredibly formulaic and repetetive.

you've got love goggles on and can't see clearly.

and beverly hills does rock, it just doesn't rock as much as jonas,
which was an incredible call by the way...in terms of calling me out,
you could not have picked a better blue ablum song to rape me with.

TRACK ONES BITCH

say it ain't so is trash, i refuse to acknowledge it. and this was my main point - the only rocking song on this cd is beverly hills - it never ratchets it up in an effective way at all. whereas on the blue album, you got your repetitive tracks now and then, but they are gems. 'beverly hills' is the only song that is half-decent on the new one and its almost pure weezer in how its structured lyrically, but the blue album/green album songs (more repetitive) still have interesting guitar (which make believe does not) and the pinkerton tracks have the emotional content similar to the rest of make believe, but the lyrics are a lot stronger and the guitar is amazing.

weezer is softer and wussier in every aspect now. thats my point.

i'm not going to disagree with you there. they are definitely softer. and i haven't heard the rest of make believe so i'm going to take you on your word for all that stuff.

i just wanted to point out your glaring blue ablum bias exemplified in trying to compare repetition as a negative aspect.

but you pretty much shut me down on that point.

so...good show.

i would argue that the downfall of weezer is the most depressing and upsetting musical development of our generation. i dont count nirvana because taht wasn't so much a musical development. but no other band has disintegrated musically in such a dramatic way. the potential was clearly there for them to put out 5 or 6 really really top level albums, and instead they have 2 great albums and a solid album and 2 pieces of shit (assuming niv is right about make believe)
