weezer's newest album, make believe is set to come out on may 10th, 2005, just 3 short days before i turn 24.1a) i should stop listening to weezer because i'm not 17 anymore
2b) weezer really needs to stop making music
i do not think 1a is going to happen, because the first two weezer albums have incredible staying power to me, and the third one isn't completely godawful so i'll throw it in from time to time. but that's pretty much where 2b comes in. weezer started getting soft with the green album, and make believe is the latest down that slippery slope from edgy emo garage rock to abysmal ballady punk-pop. none of the songs are memorable at all, except track one, of course, the repetitive "beverly hills". used to be, weezer did not have to repeat the same damn two words or the same stupid chorus over and over again to make a song memorable or interesting. however, the guitar is wholly uninteresting, and the lyrics are boring and simplistic. there is no clever word play as is found on pinkerton and none of the incredibly fun guitar that made the blue album such an instant classic.
the bottom line is this- weezer has softened up, either due to age or due to a need to make more 'acceptable' music - from what i know about the post-pinkerton rivers cuomo, it's hard to tell which it is. either way, its a failed attempt, and while i'll always hold a soft spot for weezer in my heart and will always give a future weezer album a chance, make believe is really not good at all.

re: skewed perspective
your statement "used to be, weezer did not have to repeat the same damn two words or the same stupid chorus over and over again to make a song memorable or interesting." seems a little oversimplified. and it makes you sound more like a jilted lover than a critical listener.
the blue album is really, really straight ahead and formulaic when it comes to song form. it is RIFE with repetetive choruses.
now, they are awesome choruses, not stupid, so i guess i can see the point you are trying to make here, but the implication that the blue album isn't repetetive is just silly.
and i think the moniker of "stupid" is much, much too relative. if you mean simple, lyrically and musically, i agree. beverly hills is incredibly simple. BUT, when you were 13, why did you like the blue album? because it was interesting, or because it rocked?
my point being beverly hills rocks, even if it is simple.
clearly the entire point of your post was to express your dissapointment...which you did a very good job of. but to mask it in the guise of a pseudo-review seems a little disingenuous....
i'm just sayin.
