last night i finally got to see 'the life aquatic with steve zissou'. quick synposis? good, not as good as rushmore but better than the royal tenenbaums (or at least on par) and very quirky and not for the impatient or stupid.
longer discussion - i liked it. it was slow at times, but regardless, the dialogue was pretty solid, with wes anderson continuing to explore the idea of adults as children. bill murray is predictably amazing. the set design was amazing. did i mentio the dialogue was solid? there are some real gems in there, and that hard to grasp 'subtlety' that hollywood seems to hate these days. i definitely would like to see the movie one or two more times so i can give it an overall excellent rating, but as it stands, it loses some points for me not getting some of the jokes last night when i was really tired.
the one thing that put this movie apart from a few films i've seen recently is that it truly seems from the heart, as cheesy at that sounds. in fact, it plays out kind of cheesily too. some of the lines at the end trigger the gag reflex, but overall you can tell that there was love put into this movie and everyone who made it thoroughly enjoyed it and also thought they were doing something good for the audience.
so, watch it, but pay attention and give wes anderson the benefit of the doubt, and you'll be pleased.
i'm so sick of these goddamn dolphins
