i'm still mad at yo la tengo

gots to keep writing, gots to. last monday jen and i went and saw the departed over in revere. i don't have a lot to add to what has already been said in various places, other than this - why is it ok that there are more holes in this movie than swiss cheese (OBVIOUS METAPHOR)? i recommend this movie, many people recommend this movie, but the bottom line is that you leave the theatre with a ton of questions that are just not resolved in any way. why is this acceptable? fucking scorsese.

i haven't talked about a video game here in a while, but mostly because i've been spending my time on civ4 and little else. last month i picked up lego star wars II: the original trilogy and i actually 'finished' the game yesterday. i put that in quotes because i'm actually at 48.8% complete due to all the other game modes and unlockables remaining... but i did play through story mode of the 3 movies. the game is incredibly easy, which was a nice change from ninja gaiden black (xbox) and killer 7 (gamecube), the last two non-sports games i tried out. however, as an unabashed star wars fanboy, i loved the game. lots of little jokes for those familiar with the original movies, well constructed levels for the most part, and obviously endless replayability to unlock everyone. and 25 fucking bonus points for co-op multiplayer (which of course i haven't had the opportunity to try yet).

and now, the third pillar of my recent media consumption - television. first, let me quickly say what everyone else should be saying: studio 60 on the sunset strip is awful. the jokes are either not funny or rehashes of west wing or sports night jokes. the characters are mostly not likeable, the plot is completely uninteresting (because it assumes that we like the characters), and amanda peet in particular has this awful robot-deer-in-headlights thing going on that makes me want to die. so, unlike his last attempt at the behind the scenes at a tv show thing, sorkin's show is going to fail due to low ratings BECAUSE IT SUCKS ASS. also, it seems like most tv critics are partially to completely unaware that sports night even exists. fucking jackasses get paid for this stuff? give me a break. and yes, that was strawman-y, and if i had an example readily available i'd pass it along. sorry.

the thing that makes the badness of studio 60 stick out the most is that jen and i are working through season one of the wire on the recommendation of... well, fucking everyone on the internet. apparently everyone decided that season 4 was a good time to heavily tout the wire as being anywhere from 'the best show on television' to 'the best show on television ever'. we're through 5 episodes of season 1, and already its like the few homicide episodes i watched ratched up to 20. usually people try to feel out what the hell they are doing in season one, but these guys jump right in, with characters that are likeable and with a shooting style and acting style that is undeniably real, which is not something you can say about most television. i'm pretty hooked, and i'd have to say that jen is way more hooked than i am.

consider this a segue.

my car has rust forming on the passenger side, both doors. i went and got an estimate from maaco, and they came back with $300. i went to another body shop and they said that any repairs wouldn't help anything and i was looking at something closer to $1500+. i decided at this point to not do anything about these fairly large rust spots.

my parents might fight me on this, but i don't think spending $1500 on an 8 year old camry is particularly worth it. of course, this might force me to consider purchasing a new car, which brings up this point - given that i park on the street and live in somerville, i don't want to even consider a nicer car (let alone the expense, ha) - what the hell kind of car should i consider, if, you know, the rust spots turn into rust holes?

UPDATE: i forgot to pimp my photoblog. oops. pimp pimp pimp.
