i have two conundrums
and
i'm going to throw them at you
as maybe you'll have an idea or two for me
they are both photo related
1) i have ... maybe 4000 photos on my hard drive. obstensibly, they should be dumped somewhere online for people (you) to view them. i've uploaded 160 pictures to flickr, but i have little interest in writing tags/descriptions/names for all of them... and the whole flickr thing is kind of lame, i think. i have gallery2.1 software set up on one of my domains, so i could do it that way, i guess - upload everything to photos.elscorcho.org... what do you think is the best idea? which would you prefer, even?
2) if you took 4000 photos over the course of 6 years, how would you organize them on your computer? right now i have a stupid 3 folder thing going on, one for each model of camera. i (stupidly/shortsightedly) renamed/resized all my originals back on the oldest camera (s400), but the newer ones are generically named (IMG_XXXX.JPG) and have EXIF metadata (the camera automatically stores the date and time the photo was taken, for example). i feel i should be more aggressive in how i organize them, but i don't know the best way to do it... every time i move files off the memory card, should they get their own directory?? that might be absurd, but i dunno.
help me. please?
workflow questions

re: re: workflow questions
My attempt at the most boring response ever:
I just read an article [from lifehacker] on the second. It seems like a problem that a lot of people have with digital pictures. This guy sorts his photos in directories and then (effectively) tags them by making symlinks. He also makes the distinction between images he'd like to share and one's he's just keeping for the hell of it.
Though I sometimes share pictures on my site or on Flickr (say what you want about them but it's hard to get more exposure anywhere else), I use the directory method myself. Using the EXIF data, I create "date" directories and then I'll also append a human-readable label. For example: YYYY-MM-DD-bob_and_sue_wedding. With this method, I can easily sort by date or find a particular event. And, I don't have to bother with spending time tagging each individual picture.
